Baby Crushes and Love Letters

One day, my 5-year old son came home holding a bond paper with the most delightful drawing.  I thought it was his personal artwork…. until I saw the text on the upper right  hand side of the paper.

The first “love letter”

A“, I called to him from the dining table where C and I were doing homework, “did you make this?”

“NO!”, he answered indignantly.

“Then who did?”, I inquired.

“______________ gave it to me!” he piped back.

C and I started laughing.  How adorable!  His first “love” letter from his classmate.  It’s so cute!!!

I told my husband about it and we had a good laugh around the dining table while my husband reminisced about his first crush in kinder.

About 2 weeks later, A came home… clutching another letter.  The envelope carried instructions to open and the letter had two sides, one of which looked like this…

A page from the second "love" letter.

A page from the second “love” letter.

“What’s this A?”,  I asked.

“It’s a letter from __________”,  he said a little sheepishly.  It was another “love” letter and from a different classmate this time!

But he seemed a little huffy…. so with C giggling uncontrollably in the background, I asked him “What’s wrong?”

He answered quietly: “She gave it to me in front of my crush, ____________(another girl again).  I’m shy.”

*Toink*  There goes my jaw, down near my toes again.

Even as I was resisting the urge to tease my little man, a single thought was running through my brain: “A, please don’t grow up too fast.”

  1. Oh this is so cute! They do grow up so quickly. My daughter is just 1 year 3 months and I can’t stop myself from thinking about the time when my daughter goes out dating, having crushes and having a boy friend.

    • My daughter turned 9 this year and I’m STRUGGLING really hard to keep a straight face when she talks about crushes. I think it’s even harder for my husband. It’s going to be hard to let go.
